Happy anniversary

February 24th, 2011

The Robert D. Clark Honors College celebrated its 50th anniversary at a gala in Portland on Saturday. Jan and I were lucky enough to be able to attend and to see in the room a group of people whose passion and dedication to this remarkable college within the university continues to make this one of America's great educational experiences.

It was a wonderful gala event, made even more special by the presence of two daughters of Robert D. Clark, a great granddaughter who is a currently an Honors College student, and some future Honors College students, some of whom are only six months old.

John von Schlegell, a former member of the State Board of Higher Education, a Duck parent and good friend of the UO, presented the keynote address. It was one of the best articulations of the value of a liberal arts education for life and career that I've heard in a very long time. John’s personal success and community service speaks volumes of his liberal arts education.

The Honors College continues to attract the best and brightest from around the state and nation. Its students continue to change the world.

Congratulations to the organizers of this wonderful event, and to everyone who makes the Clark Honors College a jewel of the university.
