Legacy of Brand's leadership apparent

September 17th, 2009

It is with tremendous sorrow that the University of Oregon community received news of the death of Myles Brand, who served as president of the university from 1989 to 1994. I extend my deepest condolences to President Brand's family, especially his wife, Peg, and son, Josh.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him personally, each of us in the University of Oregon community encounters the legacy of his leadership every day.

President Brand shepherded the University of Oregon through a very tumultuous fiscal time. His dedication helped reshape the university's undergraduate, graduate, and international education endeavors. In addition, his efforts were key in securing funding that allowed researchers to flourish on this campus.

President Brand was a true friend to the University of Oregon and a force in higher education around the world. He will be missed.
