Door-to-door with community leaders

September 29th, 2010

Yesterday I was joined by Mayor Kitty Piercy, Eugene Police Chief Pete Kerns, ASUO President Amelie Rousseau, City Manager Jon Ruiz, some remarkable area campus neighbors, and other university and City of Eugene officials in a long-planned Community Welcome event in the west university neighborhood. The intent of these door-to-door visits was to build and strengthen relationships between long-term residents and students. This was particularly timely considering the disturbance that occurred last weekend.

The welcoming event provided a great opportunity to remind students residing in the neighborhoods surrounding our campus how to be safe and how to be good neighbors. I want to thank our excellent Government and Community Relations team for coordinating this second-annual Community Welcome event, and also Dean of Students Paul Shang for his leadership in working with our students. We received good feedback last night and I feel strongly that working together with our campus and community partners we can make a difference.
